Chico Chism's Flamekeepers
|
It was just after the
Phoenix Blues Society's
2005 Blues Blast that I ran
into my friend Chico Chism.
Chico received the PBS
lifetime achievement
award and proudly carried
it with him wherever he
went. Later I would carry it
"Wherever he went."
It was a few years after
Chico suffered a stroke,
and he was still fighting it's
effect on his health. I told
Chico that it was too bad,
although we had been
great friends for many
years, we never had a band
together. Chico said we
would do it, and we did.
By the end of 2005 Chico
would have a new set of
false teeth and a band
called The Flamekeepers.
I wanted to have a group of
musicians that could back
Chico whenever he wanted
to get up on the bandstand.
If the musicians were too
loud, Chico would balk, and
not take the bandstand. If
Chico was comfortable
with you, he would play and
sing like the old days. The
times we could talk him
into playing drums with The
Flamekeepers were
phenomenal, inspirational
and most enjoyable. He
was the engine that drove
the band.
